Field Trips- Past and Future

Arts Off Campus

Remember this Friday is our Arts Off Campus trip to the Lincoln Theatre. Your child will need a packed lunch, drink and comfortable clothing.

Field Day

Our field day is Tuesday afternoon when we return to school after Memorial Day. Please make sure your child has gym shoes, a water bottle and sunscreen.

Kick Seining in the Scioto

We collected and rated Macoinvertebrates and learned that the Scioto  received a score of 22 which gives it an excellent/healthy rating. Beyond the science experience, spending a day in the river was just plain fun.

Scioto River Field Trip

Cross your fingers for some good weather on Monday, if it is stormy we will try to reschedule, but we may simply run out of days that we can coordinate another trip. We would love to have you walk with us down to the river if you are able. It is hardest part of the trip, especially with such a large class this year. We are going to try and leave Wickliffe around 8:30 and arrive at the river around 9:00. if you are driving, the entrance off of Nottingham is closed to automobile traffic so  you will need to enter further south on 33 closer to Griggs dam. My cell phone is 286-0826-- call me if you have trouble locating us.

We will kick seine and assess the health of the Scioto based on the macroinvertibrates we find and rate. We're also planning to create some Andy Goldsworthy inspired art pieces out of rocks, sticks and leaves we collect. Finally, after enjoying our lunches we'll walk back to Wickliffe around 12:00.

Class Party

We are planning our class party for Tuesday, June 2 at Fancyburg Park from 10:00 to 1:30. Families are invited, we'd love to have you join us for our end of the year festivities.

Read Aloud/ How to Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days

Did your child come home with a broccoli necklace?  Milo, the central character of our new read aloud,  Be A Perfect Person in Just Three Days  is on a quest to become a perfect person. While in the library, Milo is hit on the head by a book titled, Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days, and begins following the advice of its author Dr. K. Pinkerton Silverfish.  Milo reads the first chapter and receives instructions for day one, he is to get a piece of broccoli, tie a string around it and wear it all day. Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days is  a fun read but it also serves a purpose. Through class discussions, students realize that everyone makes mistakes, nobody knows everything and perfection is impossible to achieve.

ODNR Guest Speaker

This week a representative from the Department of Natural Resources visited to teach us about Ohio reptiles. Here Matt is showing us a Corn Snake.

Crayfish/ Structures of Life

This week I  brought Crayfish into the classroom to be cared for and observed by the children. Through this direct experience with organisms I hope to engender in students a sense of respect for all life and to spark a desire to understand the complex systems that support life on Earth.

Town Meeting: April 24th

Our class will participate in Town Meeting, next Friday, April the 24th at 8:30 a.m.. We hope you can come to see our class teach Wickliffe about "The Fluency Five"--- five steps to take toward better fluency and reading comprehension. We will also demonstrate fluent reading by sharing some partner poems.

Stop upstairs in our room after our performance--maybe we can share a few donut holes!

Cooperative Learning

With the third graders spending two afternoons online taking the math PARCC test and second and third graders taking the STAR online math test; I thought I would incorporate some academic and social learning into our day by giving partners a cooperative learning challenge. The teams needed to build the tallest tower they could using marshmallows and toothpicks and remain within a five inch square base. Afterwards we wrote about what we learned from the experience.

What we learned about structures:

-Structures need a solid and strong base.
-Triangles are stronger and sturdier than squares.
-If your structure fails- start over and try something different.

What we learned about working with a partner:

-Talk together about your plan before your start working.
-More people means more ideas.
-If things don't work out, don't fall on the floor and cry.
