Soles4Souls

Our initial count, after emptying our donation boxes on Friday was.................202 pairs of shoes!!
A few more pairs of shoes were donated after the children left at the end of the day, so we will update our final number next week. On Monday, we will count our coin donations and work out what we will need to ship our shoes to Soles4Souls.

Landforms/Research Writing

This unit develops an understanding of landforms and bodies of water, building a deeper knowledge of geography. We will use a  variety of activities to explore the geographical features of earth. The content areas of geography, reading, writing, and art are integrated throughout the unit.

Groups of 2 or 3 children have each been assigned a landform to study and produce a research paper. We are using a scaffolding strategy to research and organize information for writing a research paper. A research paper scaffold provides students with clear support for writing expository papers that include a question (problem), literature review, analysis, methodology for original research, results, conclusion, and references. Students examine informational text, use an inquiry-based approach, and practice genre-specific strategies for expository writing.

PARCC testing

I just received our class results for the Ohio third grade reading test. Our class average was  above the State average and the Upper Arlington school district 3rd grade class average score. I know your children as readers, I am keenly aware of where they are now and what skills they need before they move on to the next grade. I am assessing and monitoring your children on a daily basis. I believe in assessment. It informs my teaching. However, after soul searching AND researching I have concerns about the PARCC test.

February 17th and 23rd have been set aside for Ohio's performance based assessments for math and reading. The state of Ohio  has selected the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers)  by the Pearson company to test all children. I hope you will have some time to select the link below and take the 3rd grade practice test.  *To the best of your ability try put yourself in the place of your 8 or 9 year child navigating this test. I would appreciate any feedback you would like to share after trying the 3rd grade test.

The Pearson PARCC test is yet to be field tested and navigating  the test online is extremely difficult.  The online format will not allow the children to use many of the beneficial skills they have been taught, such as using a yellow highlighter or underscoring significant passages. They will have to tab back and forth in order to contrast and compare reading passages. The test requires the children to type all of  their answers. The test will not reveal if their score is due to lack of skills or simply not being able to finish the test in the allotted time. ( A problem that plagued many New York students.) I will not know if their score reflects an ambiguous question, lack of ability or skill to use computer proficiently rather than a lack of knowledge.
